Phenom gave me the idea for this. I dont prefer one to the other, but I like whats good on each side. Some peoples wax chops sound like trash and some peoples chops on the keys sound like 2 year olds. In sampling I think that people need to start being more creative and not so anal retentive about being "real hip hop" and all these little rules. Make hot shit is rule number one in my books from now on. And with composing pop hits I'm hating all the use of canned sounds. Ok I like reason and logic, but damn can somebody out there actually record a guitar or a drum kit of a piano etc. for a change. Im getting kind of sick of tritons motifs and all these canned sounds. Software is way ahead of hardware for realistic instruments, but you have to know how to play the keys to make it sound like that instrument and not a violin played on keys. |

I here what your saying but you gotta look at hiphop music in general...Most of the dopest beats ever are the most simplistic and plain with a basic Sample/Loop&Drums&a Bassline.... Also its very rare that you will find a actual musician that creates hiphop beats period, just based on that.
A good example would be this lil dude i met when i lived in vancouver..I cant remember his producer name now but he did beats for joey stylez and a few others and is prolly still doing it big at the age of 16....
The catch is that he's a trained violinist...like dude went to school to learn to play the violin and is super talented...But he refused to play violin on his beats...and said that using that talent with hiphop jus wasnt a good idea or not whut he wanted to do...i never understood that really as violin can be dope in beats, but it was more that he thought of it like classical music has its sound and place and that it didnt belong in hiphop...i asked him if he could record some and let me sample his playing and he wouldnt do that either.
Anyway i guess whut im saying is hiphop is meant to be simple basic beats and when a producer puts too much 'musical elements' into the beat it takes away from the rapper ect. I do this alot..i try to make my beats sound too technical and therefor no one would sound good on them...and they end up left as instrumentals. I always feel like there should be somthin else there or that the beats too simple, then i realize once you add the vocals it can become a whole new song and all the lil extra sounds added in dont really mean shit...
With all that said i still kinda agree with you...some stuff jus sounds bad and isn't musical at all...and im not a fan of those beats...like people who try to take some keyboard sounds and play their own riff's when they cant play a riff for the life of them. I also strongly think that violins and guitars and instruments like that will never sound real when played on keys cause theres certain harmonics/finger sounds that guitars give off while being played....you cant get that from a keyboard....you also have sustain pedals on a real pianoe witch change the level and tone of the keys while their being played....vst pianoes can be set for this but its not easy unless your a trained pianist....
Anyway this is why i mainly stick to samplebased stuff...im a trained bass player but that doesnt help when im trying to play pianoe or anything else...i usually scrap most of my stuff that i try to play unless its somthin simple that works with a sample or somthin....
anyway to each their own... _________________ Check out the new Album!!!

i taught myself how to play a bit. haha. thats it. i couldn't play you one thing you asked me to, but i can bang out some lil melodys. And I feel aries on the fact I got beats laying around that are "too rank" with too much instrumentation, and theres no room left to spit on it. But I love listenin to them anyways. lol. yeayer.

I think people try to define hip-hop too much.
Hip-hop is a culture that constantly expands and will always be pressing the limits. Imposing limitations upon hip-hop will only hinder its musical expansion.
Not a direct response to anyone, but sometimes I get irritated when people try to say "hip-hop is this" or "hip-hop is that".
The truth is hip-hop is whatever we make it.
Art by definition starts with intention. If an artist intends their music to be hip-hop, then it is, in the artist's mind, hip hop.
Whether others agree is up to them, but who is to say who's right?
Hip-hop is art, and art defies boundaries. _________________ www.myspace.com/injectiontheone

I can appreciate both, but if a song does something really creative with a sample I'm familiar with, I rock that shit to death. To me, taking something and flipping it is way more interesting than creating something out of nothing. But that's just me. _________________ Lobster sub or bust.
